So you’ve decided to fence your home or commercial property, but you’re not sure what type of fence you need. From natural wood to elaborate wrought iron, it can be difficult to decide which materials may be worth a higher price.

There are many reasons to build a fence, and the best material depends on your goals. Privacy, security, aesthetic value, and price can all play a role in your decision.

As you plan your new fence, make sure the fencing material aligns with your goals.

Wood Fences

Wood fences are a classic for a reason. This material tends to be fairly affordable, durable, and good for privacy, which is the main reason why people choose to build fences in the first place. Your yard will feel more intimate and private after installing a wooden fence. You can choose from several different wood fence styles, such as estate, horizontal, or deco top.

On the downside, wood fences are more prone to damage from insects and the environment. Wood fences are also fairly easy for motivated intruders to bypass.

One of the best types of wood to use for fences is cedar. This material is not only hardy but also aesthetically pleasing. You can keep the natural appearance as is or finish it with paint to create the appearance you desire.

Wrought Iron Fences

iron fenceWrought iron fences are ideal for people who want to take their home appearance to the next level. They not only look beautiful but are one of the best options for improving security. Many automatic gates systems are made with wrought iron since it can be extremely difficult to break through or climb over an iron fence.

Iron fences are generally low maintenance. When properly treated, wrought iron fences can last for several decades.

Wrought iron fences tend to be more expensive than other materials, such as wood or vinyl. They also do not create as much privacy as a solid wood or vinyl fence. However, they’re generally worth it if you can afford the higher cost and aren’t concerned about privacy.

Chain-Link Fences

Chain-link fences are extremely inexpensive. These schoolyard standbys are easy to install and create a clear separation between properties, but that’s about it.

A chain-link fence can act as a barrier to unauthorized entry, but on its own, it won’t do much to deter someone who is motivated. It’s easy for intruders to climb over a chain-link fence. While a plain chain link fence offers little privacy, slats are an option for many chain link fences, providing similar privacy to a wood fence.

Vinyl Fences

Solid Privacy Vinyl FenceVinyl fences require virtually no maintenance. They are nearly 5 times stronger than wood fences and can be very flexible, making them a good choice for anyone who is concerned about their fence holding up in extreme weather. They are also resistant to moisture, humidity, and bugs.

Vinyl fences can be made in a wide variety of colors, though white and other neutrals tend to be the most popular. The primary downside of vinyl fences, besides the expense, is that they look like plastic (which they are). This material may look out of place next to certain building materials. If you hope to improve the appearance of your home or property, a vinyl fence may not be the best choice.
